“Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) worry about Vela’s commitment to preserving the wilderness, pointing to Vela’s decision as Southeast director to allow off-road vehicles in public lands adjacent to Florida’s Big Cypress National Reserve. Vela’s nomination now moves for vote before the full Senate, which is likely to happen before the end of the year. If confirmed, Vela will be the first Latino director of the National Park Service.”
