Last week, PEER filed formal comments opposing the Trump administration’s sweeping proposed rule that will pose a serious threat to honest government and destroy independent science in the United States.
The rule would hand political appointees unreviewable control over trillions of dollars in federal grants. This comes as the administration continues its concerted efforts to politicize inspectors general, weaken whistleblower protections, and remove civil service safeguards designed to prevent corruption and self-dealing.
Fighting back against these efforts is central to PEER’s mission. We have long understood a fundamental truth: without honest government that welcomes oversight and dissent, we cannot have strong, lasting environmental protections. Corrupt governments don’t protect our water, air, or public lands — they turn them over to the highest bidder.
