Scientists at the Environmental Protection Agency are producing fewer peer-reviewed studies following recent staffing cuts, according to data released from an environmental nonprofit group.
Figures released by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility show the EPA produced 275 peer-reviewed studies in 2025 — about a 17% decrease compared to the year prior.
PEER’s data shows that the EPA released 61 peer-reviewed publications by agency scientists so far in 2026. At this pace, PEER estimates that the agency will complete 163 peer-reviewed publications by the end of the year.
