“The ongoing response by the state Department of Environmental Conservation to the threat of PFAS from Norlite in Cohoes and the nearby communities’ soil and streams is what citizens should expect from this agency. However, DEC has not responded to the potential presence of PFAS in leachate from the Dunn Landfill in the city of Rensselaer. DEC was informed of the presence of PFAS in nearby waterways in March after testing by Rensselaer Environmental Coalition and Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility. The potential for this dangerous chemical in the leachate and the soil needs to be determined by DEC. The public is entitled to the same level of effort in this situation as in the case of Norlite since PFAS can be hazardous to humans and the environment.”
