The 470-mile-long Greenlink West transmission line proposed to span the length of Nevada from Las Vegas to Reno will cross the boundaries of a national monument established by Congress a decade ago to protect Ice Age fossils.
Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, for example, has become a fierce critic of the potential of the transmission line crossing the Tule Springs Fossil Beds monument, which is managed by the National Park Service. The watchdog group says it would be unacceptable for the Greenlink West to disturb the fossilized remains of long-extinct species like the Columbian mammoth and the sabertooth cat.
