The EPA won’t ban a chemical that oil refineries use to make high octane gasoline, jet fuel and marine diesel fuel.
The Environmental Protection Agency rejected a petition that Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) had submitted asking the agency to ban hydrofluoric acid at oil refineries because it can cause explosions.
Hydrofluoric acid is used as a catalyst to break down, or “crack,” petroleum into other chemicals, according to a World Health Organization agency.
