PEERMail | Furloughs and Firings

Tags: , ,

PEER has praised a federal judge’s recent decision to temporarily block the Trump administration’s plan to fire federal employees during the government shutdown.

As a result of a court order in that case, we now know that the Trump administration had been planning further cuts to the federal workforce during the shutdown. Among the agencies most impacted would have been the Department of the Interior, where nearly 2,000 additional firings are planned. The National Park Service, which has already seen a 24 percent decline in permanent employees since January, will see a further 2 percent reduction in its workforce if these plans move forward.

While these layoffs cannot occur during the shutdown unless this decision is overturned, we are continuing to document the disastrous effects these cuts are having across the government and sharing that information with the public and our elected leaders.

If you have a story or information to share with us about the importance of the federal civil service in your life and work, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Sincerely,

Tim Whitehouse
Executive Director
