Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) says EPA has been “unable to account for” 53 investigations into claims of scientific integrity violations — many at the TSCA office — that it told the Office of Inspector General (OIG) it had closed in 2021-22, renewing allegations that enforcement of the integrity policy is deeply flawed. In a Dec. 14, release, PEER, which represents government whistleblowers on environmental issues, raised the claim that EPA documents that the group obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request appear to conflict with statistics that OIG included in its May 2022 semiannual report to Congress, which said officials told the watchdog office that the agency had closed or otherwise resolved 53 scientific integrity complaints.
