I am proud to report that PEER is leading a coalition of groups in a lawsuit against the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the National Park Service (NPS) for failing to protect the Old Spanish National Historic Trail as required by law.
Congress designated the Old Spanish National Historic Trail by statute in 2002. The trail spans 2,700 miles and crosses wild and scenic country in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah.
BLM and NPS have failed to submit a comprehensive plan for the management and use of the trail as required by law. As a result, at least 38 separate projects on federal lands or under federal control have led to detrimental impacts on the trail. In some areas, the trail has been obliterated.
Too often, we allow development to chip away at the integrity of our public lands, destroying important ecosystems and harming the archeological, historical, and natural resources. We are proud to work with our partners to help protect this important trail for current and future generations.

Tim Whitehouse
