The lack of sufficient regulations on waste containing “forever chemicals” leaves U.S. communities vulnerable to increased shipments of dangerous substances, according to a new report.
The report, published Thursday by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, reveals that the average amount of waste containing PFAS transferred each month has increased since June 2018, when EPA began collecting the data.
“EPA must ban the importation of all waste contaminated with PFAS and develop regulations to manage safely PFAS waste generated in the U.S.,” said Tim Whitehouse, PEER’s executive director. “It is unconscionable to allow this waste to flow into communities already overburdened with toxic pollution, especially when EPA has already been missing in action.”
