“Water tests taken at three locations near the Dunn Landfill found elevated levels of toxic chemicals, environmentalist groups said Saturday.
The groups, the Rensselaer Environmental Coalition and Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, said the toxic levels of PFAS compounds were found near the landfill, which abuts Rensselaer Junior/Senior High School.
“None are drinking water sources, but they do drain into the Hudson River, which is a source of drinking water for 7 upstate New York communities,” the groups said in a statement.
Water samples were sent to an Environmental Protection Agency-certified lab, the groups said. PFAS compounds were found in three locations: Quackenderry Creek, where nine different PFAS chemicals were found; a stream north of John Street, where 10 compounds were found and a small stream next to the school, where nine compounds were found.”
