PEERMail | Looking Ahead to Four More Years

Tags: ,

It’s official — President Trump is now the 47th President of the United States, and a new era is upon us. We welcome the peaceful transfer of power, which remains the most important cornerstone of any democracy.

However, in the coming days, months, and years, we will see unparalleled threats to the values and beliefs that bind us together as an organization. The President has already issued a flurry of executive orders that cover a full range of topics, from withdrawing the U.S. from the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Accords to easing regulatory “burdens” on the oil and gas industry.

In the face of these threats, we will continue our agenda of advancing efforts to protect the civil service and the environment and defending against attempts to weaken these protections.

We will see an influx of government employees coming to us for advice and counsel as they’re asked to alter science, hide important documents, undermine environmental and public health protections, and display loyalty to political leaders over the law and constitution. We will continue our mission of providing free legal advice to these employees while helping to address the underlying environmental problems that brought them to us.

Our work will be strictly non-partisan. Whatever challenges lie ahead, we will remain loyal to our core principle of protecting public employees who protect the environment, and we will not back down on our shared values and beliefs.

As we begin this new chapter, all of us at PEER are so grateful for your support, encouragement, and input into our work.

Onward,

Tim Whitehouse
Executive Director

Check out this new PEER report, which found that the state’s premier law to fight climate change is not working and is extremely costly to Maryland consumers. Is Zeldin Along for the Ride?

Tim Whitehouse joins Ken Cook, President of the Environmental Working Group, on his biweekly podcast to provide commentary on the confirmation hearing of Lee Zeldin, President Trump’s pick to lead the US EPA. Whitehouse wonders whether Zeldin is “along for the ride” or if he’ll try to moderate some of the more extreme views held by those around the President. Learn more>>
